Bonsai Teacher Ms. Kaori Yamada

Visit to the Seiko-en bonsai garden in Bonsai-cho, Kita-ku, Saitama, Saitama Prefecture

In the city of Saitama there is a town called Bonsai-cho where there are many bonsai gardens. This district is generally known as the Bonsai Village, and four years ago the Omiya Bonsai Art Museum was opened here as a municipal facility. The area is literally the mecca of Japan’s bonsai culture.

We have asked Ms. Kaori Yamada, the fifth-generation head of Seiko-en, one of the bonsai gardens in the town, and master of the Saika style of bonsai, to hold a bonsai workshop for foreign diplomats stationed in Japan. Ms. Yamada is active in the dissemination of bonsai especially among young people and women; apparently over 1,000 students currently attend Saika-style bonsai classes. The number of bonsai fans is increasing
worldwide as well, and the World Bonsai Convention is scheduled to be held in Saitama in 2017. (TU)
